American Buffalo Coins

In 1913 the U.S. Mint used design for the nickel which depicted a buffalo. Many years later, in 2006 the U.S. Mint decided to borrow the design and create a gold coin that would also depict a buffalo. The 1 ounce American Buffalo Gold coin shows the same buffalo from the 1913 nickel, which was a buffalo that actually lived in Central Park in New York City.

The American Buffalo gold coin is seen as a follow-up to the American Eagle Gold coin. Unfortunately because the American Eagle Gold coin did not contain a high enough percentage of gold (91.67%) many investors were buying foreign gold coins. To stop this from happening the American Buffalo gold coin was released and it contained 99.999% 24 karat gold.

The United States has a number of facilities that produce gold coins and the American Buffalo is coincidentally made in West Point New York, which is the same state were the buffalo lived which is displayed on the coin.
