Between 1840 and 1873, the United States Mint, which has the responsibility to issue coins for circulation in the U.S. created the Seated Liberty Silver Dollar. This stunning coin is the design of Christian Gobrecht and it depicts Lady Liberty in a seated position on one side, with a bald eagle on the reverse side.
The coin itself contains 0.77344 troy oz of silver and is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. Like many other coin designs, the copper is used to make the coin harder and therefore last longer in circulation without major damage.
Of all the Seated Liberty Silver dollars produced during it's production run, the 1870 coin made at the San Francisco mint facility is the rarest with only 12-15 known to be existence today. One other Seated Liberty Silver dollar could be even more sought after, but it is rather elusive. The 1851-O is apparently the only one of it's kind, but no one is quite sure where it is as it has not been seen at auction or private sale in many years.
